MORE ABOUT WIGENTON CANDLE CO.
Our Story
My love for candles started many years ago when I realized that while enjoying a lit candle it brought back memories and put my mood in a state of happiness, joy, and comfort. When I light a candle, it signals a time to relax, celebrate, or remember moments with family members who created lasting memories for me. Did you know the sense of smell is the strongest sense tied to memory? If not, picture some of your most comforting moments, like the salty air at your favorite vacation spot, grandma’s apple pie baking, or the smell of a real Christmas tree at your favorite aunt’s house. That’s what candles do for me. Take me back to those times filled with joy, help me relax after a long hard day, and help elevate my mood when I’m not feeling my best.
Being the candle lover that I am, I’ve purchased candles for years - from the cheap candles at the Dollar Store to high-end candles from luxury resorts. And, they all had one thing in common: making my upper respiratory system go into a frenzy. Maybe you’ve been there too. After about an hour (or less) of burning my competitors’ candles, do you feel like someone’s standing on your chest or do you go into coughing bouts? You may have blamed the candle. And, spoiler - you’d be right!
Back then I thought “Can it be true? Are these candles causing me breathing issues?” After looking into the problem and doing my research, I realized all my old candles were made with paraffin wax! Side note, if you haven’t heard, research shows paraffin is extremely harmful to our environment and our health. At this point it hit me. I had to take candle-making seriously not only for my health but for all the other candle-lovers out there like me!
That’s when my quest to make a healthier candle began. The simple truth is so many companies on the market today use some sort of wax blend that includes paraffin - and still market their candles as soy! And, since there weren’t many all-natural soy candle products on the market, I decided to make my own.
For starters, I sought out all types of wax. But, I kept coming back to soy. Soy was the high-quality renewable resource that could answer all my candle-related respiratory issues.
Next, the fragrance. A candle still has to smell good, or what’s the point, right? Keeping with the idea of making a more natural candle, I sought companies who design fragrance oils specifically for candles and more importantly soy wax.
And, let’s be honest. The candle has to look good and be safe! After all, what would all this soy-amazingness be if not nestled into a beautiful, but safe container? My goal was (and still is) to use only fire and heat-safe containers from legit candle manufacturing companies. And, I test each candle before it goes home with you. I strive to make candles that are safe, but also gorgeous. And I want my vessels to be a part of your home, blending into your decor, but also enhancing it. I wanted my customers to keep the jars, even when all the wax had burned down.
Lastly, to top it off... I decided that an all-natural candle (with all-natural wax and fragrance) couldn’t have a traditional wick. Oh no. We finished these beauties off with untreated wooden wicks.
After I found all the materials, I was excited to get to work. I had that new-kid-in-school butterflies-in-my-stomach feeling knowing I was onto something special. I was helping not only myself but anyone else who suffers from minor to chronic conditions. I ordered all the products, made a sample candle, then tested it out. That day when I was testing my first candle, I looked up to realize it had been burning for hours and I didn’t FEEL A THING. Yep, It didn’t bother my asthma. This had never happened with candles in the past. After that first test, I made a dozen and tested the market. This was the beginning of my family’s all-natural soy candle journey.
And, I’m proud to say we’ve been in business for a while now and have many happy, healthy, repeat clients as a result. Through this time, I’ve never settled and worked to perfect Wigenton Candles with each candle we deliver. I’ve also increased my goals. Not only do I want to create the most healthy-burning candle around, but I also want to bring education and awareness around candle products, the benefits of soy versus other wax products, and the importance of knowing the type of fragrance oils used. I burn my candles all day (remember to trim that wick!) and breathe easy knowing I have no worries about my or my beautiful customers’ health as a result.
Hope you love my candles as much as I do,
~Stephanie - xo
